Predictive genetic testing
By way of a blood sample or buccal swab, a genetic test examines DNA for the Huntingtin mutation. Families at risk or individuals presenting with Huntington’s symptoms take this test to determine their status. Prior to genetic testing, individuals undergo genetic counselling. Genetic counselling ensures that people are well informed and prepared in case they choose to take the predictive test. Deciding to be tested is a delicate issue and even after counselling individuals can always opt out of taking the test.
Genetic tests should always be accompanied by consultations with a Neurologist.
